That may solve the capacity problem. But it may also avoid a more important question: Is the test strategy itself still right for the factory? ##### When SMT Gets Faster, the Test Equation Changes Many manufacturers use a sequential process built around in-circuit test (ICT), programming and functional test. In many applications, that structure makes perfect sense. But as SMT output increases, the economics can change. If test begins to fall behind, the issue isn't simply how many boards the test department can process. Adding capacity to a sequential process works. Two testers can do more work than one. But more capacity can also mean another tester, another fixture, additional labor and more floor space. At some point, it makes sense to ask whether the better answer is more of the existing architecture — or a different architecture. ##### Test Is Also a Manufacturing Feedback Loop There is another consequence when test falls behind production. A failing board isn't simply a bad board. It's information that something upstream may have changed. When test keeps pace with SMT, that feedback can come back quickly enough for manufacturing to react. When test falls behind, production continues while boards wait to be tested. By the time a pattern becomes clear, more failing boards may already have been produced. What good is a process monitor if it tells you about a manufacturing problem four hours after you could have done something about it? Test takt time isn't only a capacity issue. In one automotive ECU application, a parallel test architecture reduced effective per-device test time from 25 seconds to 6 seconds while consolidating test stages into a smaller automated test cell. That's a different kind of capacity improvement. Rather than simply adding more copies of the existing process, it changes how the test is performed. ##### Test Architecture Becomes a Management Decision The broader implication is that test architecture can affect much more than test time. It can change the number of stations and fixtures required, direct labor, floor-space demand, throughput capacity and the speed of manufacturing feedback. That's why test strategy can become a management issue rather than simply a test-engineering decision. Senior manufacturing leaders don't need to become test experts. But before approving more test capacity, they should know the answers to two questions: Is test keeping pace with SMT?
